There’s lots of other stories to read about on this site and I didn’t think that mine would ever be one that I was going write, but here it is.
This year marks 5 years of The Foo Fam, and what a 5 years it’s been. Friendships have grown, weddings have happened and babies have been born into the world. We’ve raised £1000’s for various charities and helped make dreams come true. A true fan community has been built not just on line but in the real world, all over the world.
One of our greatest projects was the #NoMoreTouts Kickstarter project – you can read more about that here – http://www.foofightersuk.com/2014/09/23/fan-forum-joins-forces-with-kickstarter-to-fund-foo-fighters-gig/
There’s a team on 10+ people all over the world that help look after all of the social network platforms we are on, keeping everybody up to date and most importantly making sure it’s a safe and pleasant place to be. I can’t take credit for all of their hard work, I really couldn’t do it on my own.
Over the last 5 years, I’ve really enjoyed talking to lots of new people, I have met some of my best friends over the last 5 years.
I’ve never expected anything back from anybody, I just never realised that I have touched as many people as I have.
So this is what happened:
Foo Fighters released the 20th Anniversary show on the 4th of July in Washington DC
I thought nothing more of it and completely dismissed it, pft..yeah right – that was NEVER gunna happen
Every year we have a MASSIVE Foo Fam weekend get together. They have been in various locations all over the country, something that a team of us have organised every year, including food entertainment, live music, bouncy castles and games. It’s always a great few days and gives people an opportunity to meet those that they have forged great friendships with. This year we thought it would be great to go to the adult only Rock weekend at Butlins Minehead. Nick and I couldn’t attend the whole weekend, but there has never been a meet without us, so as it was just up the road we went for the day. We had arranged to meet everybody mid day for drinks, to catch up with old friends and meet some new faces. Completely normal…or so I thought!
We were asked to sit down, in front of a lap top and A LOT of people all stood around us watching. We watched a video that included messages from people all over the world thanking us for what we do and what we have created and it has helped them. Watching video messages from people I care very much about, but have never met…or so I thought.
We were given a gift that day, from people all over the world who wanted to show us their appreciation. Nick and I were given an all expenses paid trip to Washington DC to attend the Foo Fighters 20th anniversary show on the 4th July in Washington DC, with a second show attached to the schedule in Camden NJ just 2 days later. everything was booked and paid for, Nick and I were going to DC!
I’m writing this 2 weeks later and to be honest it still hasn’t really sunk in. I’ve always been quite a modest person and I have never really blown my own trumpet, I get my enjoyment from the enjoyment of others. Being modest, this write up doesn’t do the experience any justice. I never thought for 1 minute that what we try and do for other people as a group would be done to Nick and I by the very same group. From everything to the 100’s of people that organised it, the secrets that were kept and the thought and energy that went into the whole thing. As for the reasons behind this gift, that’s not my story to tell but I’m sure you’ll hear all about that from somebody else.
We’ll be reporting Live from Washington DC…..so watch this space.
Thank you Foo Fam for the best gift we have ever received.
